Why use SSL?

Dated material: Nov 13, 2006

Encrypt your data for privacy. SSL makes data appear as random gibberish during transfer so a network spy cannot read it.

SSL can fix strange Entourage synchronization problems. Often times, Entourage working over DAV (port 80) can have many different kinds of synchronization problems which appear as folders that will not sync to the server or incorrectly deleted emails, contacts, or calendar events. Many firewalls do packet inspection and can interfere with DAV synchronization. If, however, the packets are encrypted, packet inspection can not interfere. For this reason, SSL can actually fix strange problems in Entourage. Even if you do not have a firewall, it is possible some packet inspection is occurring at remote locations so laptop users can benfit from using SSL.

How to Add a Root Certificate for Entourage with SSL

  1. Use Safari to go to your Kerio Webmail account. Look for the "lock" icon in the upper-right corner of the web browser and click on it.

  2. A dialog appears with a picture of a stamp. This is the Kerio MailServer's SSL certificate. Drag this stamp onto an empty part of your desktop.

  3. Now, open finder and go into "Applications" then "Utilities"

  4. In the Utilities folder, find the "Keychain Access" icon, but DO NOT click on it or run it.

  5. Drag the certificate from the Desktop over the "Keychain Access" icon so that the icon highlights, then drop.

  6. An "Add Certificates" pop-up appears. Do not click "OK" yet.

  7. Change the "Keychain:" click-down type to "X509 Anchors"

  8. Click "OK"
